V 11-11 The Six Paramitas and the Four Boundless States 四无量心悟出六波罗蜜

佛经上讲,佛在世日,就是佛还在世间的时候,以佛为师,佛灭度之后怎么办?以戒为师。师父给你们讲 来讲去还是一个“戒”字,这个“戒”字非常重要。 “戒如明日月”,一个人只要守戒,就像明月般清净光 明,能引导众生从迷惑走向觉悟。夜也明朗,你们有时 候坐在外面很安静的地方,晚上一个人静静在花园里看 着月亮,心里很安静,心里也安定。过去很多古人喝点 酒,一看月亮,人一感动、一感触,“床前明月光……”,他就开始吟诗了。

The Buddhist scriptures expounded that when the Buddha is in the Human Realm, then we treat the Buddha as our master. Then what happens if Buddha has left the Human Realm? Then we treat the precepts as our master. What Master has been preaching has always revolved around the term ‘precepts’. Precepts are very important. ‘Precepts are illuminating like the sun and the moon’. As long as one observes the precepts, then they will be as clear and illuminating as the sun and the moon, and they could guide other sentient beings from delusion to awakenment. The night sky can also be clear. Sometimes when you’re sitting quietly in your garden at night time, and you stare at the moon, your mind feels at peace. In ancient times, some people would quietly sip on their cup of wine and stare at the moon, and become inspired by the surroundings and starts reciting poetry.


一个人要有高尚的心境,如果一个人拥有高尚的境 界,他就会建立起高尚的思维,产生高尚的行为;如果 一个人的境界很低级,他就会进入低级的思维,产生低 级的行为。所以,“戒如明日月,亦如璎珞珠;微尘菩萨众,由是成正觉”,这是什么意思呢?天上有一种叫 璎珞珠的,非常明亮。“微尘菩萨众”,就是说,在人 间有很多很多的菩萨,那我们都是菩萨,因为我们是未来佛,是未来的菩萨。“由是成正觉”,就是有这么多 的菩萨在人间,他们就像天上的夜明珠一样,因为他们 守戒,他们的心明如日月,他们都是正觉的菩萨啊。就是告诉大家,一个人相续的善行就会成善男子、善女人的本,所以要守戒。如果能守五戒,君子能利生。利 生是什么?利生就是事业成功之本。你们去看好了,事业成功的男人不好色。过去国家兴旺的皇上没有好色 的,好色的皇上不理朝政,他的朝代很快地就会被灭 亡。

One should possess a noble state of mind. Then they would develop noble thoughts, and conduct themselves in a noble manner. If a person’s state of mind is very vulgar, then they will develop vulgar thoughts, and they will behave in a vulgar manner. ‘Precepts are illuminating like the sun and the moon, and as shiny as jade; the Bodhisattvas are as numerous as dust, from becoming enlightened’. What does that mean? In heaven, the jade there is very shiny. ‘Bodhisattvas are as numerous as dust’, it means that there are many Bodhisattvas in the Human Realm. In a sense, we are all Bodhisattvas, that’s because we are future Buddhas and future Bodhisattvas. ‘From becoming enlightened’, many Bodhisattvas are here in the Human Realm. They are like the jade and gemstones in heaven because they observe the precepts, so their mind is as illuminating as the sun and the moon. They are all enlightened Bodhisattvas. That is to tell you, those who continually perform wholesome deeds will accumulate virtues that form the basis of a wholesome person. That’s why one must observe the precepts. If one could observe the five precepts, then the exemplary person will prosper and enjoy a smoother career path. Observe. Men who are successful in their career aren’t lustful. If you observe the past kings and emperors who governed a prosperous nation of their time, you could see that they were not lustful. Kings who are lustful gradually neglect their duties in the government, and their era would quickly end.


接下来,师父跟大家解释一下什么叫“六波罗 蜜”。如果你想做如来菩萨,你想涅槃,你必须行六波 罗蜜,你才能成佛道,才能成如来。如果我们都是菩 萨,我们想修成佛,我们必须要做到六波罗蜜。那么, 六波罗蜜是什么呢?六波罗蜜就是修成佛的六种行持, 也就是六种行为准则。第一,布施波罗蜜。第二,持戒 波罗蜜。第三,忍辱波罗蜜。第四,精进波罗蜜。第 五,禅定波罗蜜。就是定得下来,坐有坐相,站有站相。一个人坐不住、站不住,站起来摇头晃脑、摇头摆 尾,这种人能修成佛吗?他有禅定吗?第六,般若波罗 蜜。“般若”什么?就是智慧。六波罗蜜就是说,如果 一个人想从菩萨进入佛的境界,你必须要更多地布施, 然后要持戒,要忍辱,要精进,要禅定,要有般若智 慧。

Next, Master explains what the ‘six paramitas’ are. If you want to become a Thus Come One Bodhisattva and you want to attain nirvana, then you must practise the six paramitas in order to do so. So what are the six paramitas? They are the six cultivational practices or behavioural standards to attain Buddhahood. The first paramita is giving. The second paramita is observing precepts. The third paramita is forbearance. The fourth paramita is diligence. The fifth paramita is dhyana. It’s the ability to concentrate deeply. One should look like they’re sitting when they’re sitting, or they should look like they’re standing when they’re standing. If a person can’t sit or stand quietly and keeps fidgeting around, would this kind of person able to cultivate into a Buddha? Could they concentrate? The sixth paramita is prajna wisdom. What is ‘prajna’? It’s wisdom. The six paramitas are like a set of guidelines where if one wants to enter into the Buddha’s level of spirituality, then they must perform more giving, observe precepts, forbear, be diligent, have a zen level of concentration and possess prajna wisdom.


波罗蜜是什么意思呢?波罗蜜就叫度到彼岸、到达 彼岸,度就是达到了。就是说,你的布施已经到了忘我 的、完全超脱自己的境界,已经到了彼岸,已经到了一 种忘我的境界,就是让身处苦海的人能够恢复本来就有 的觉知、觉能,所以能恢复本性的人就称为“波罗 蜜”,到达了彼岸,而且慈悲和功德,用波罗蜜以无私 的对佛的愿力来做事情。只要你大悲普度众生,用波罗 蜜,就是说用精进智慧到达彼岸的这种精神,无私的对 佛的愿力:“菩萨,我一定度众生,我怎么怎么样。”大悲普度众生,无有疲厌,永远不会疲劳和厌倦地努力 修心,你就拥有了波罗蜜。六波罗蜜就是概括了菩萨修 行的方法。

What does paramita mean? Paramita means ‘gone to the other side’. In other words, when you continuously give to the point of being selfless, and you have completely forgotten about yourself and have gone beyond your basic level of spirituality, then you have gone to the other side. You have gone to a selfless level of spirituality. It’s a transformation of a person who had been trapped in a torrent of suffering into somebody who has recovered their latent awareness and abilities. Those who have recovered their inherent nature has gone through ‘paramita’, and has reached the other side. They would be do everything compassionately and virtuously and do what the Buddha has vowed to do selflessly. For example, “Bodhisattvas, I will definitely spiritually awaken and others and perform so and so deeds.” If you can keep cultivating diligently, wisely and tirelessly, then it means you possess the spirit of the paramitas. The six paramitas are the general methods of how the Bodhisattva cultivates.


现在你们知道了菩萨是怎么修行的。你们今天如果 已经到达了很高的境界,已经是菩萨了,现在我们想向 佛的境界修行,知道怎么修吗?六波罗蜜,又称为“六度万行”。这个“六度”就是六波罗蜜。“万行”是什 么呢?就是什么都做得到,“万”并不是说只有一万, 而是代表很多的意思。就是说,只要你掌握了这六度, 你什么都能做到了。要记住,六度万行离不开慈悲心。如果正在修行的 菩萨慈悲心不够,那就不会圆满,所以要想修成佛,不 能离开慈悲心。佛当年是先讲了四无量心,然后他才说 六波罗蜜。

Now you know how the Bodhisattvas cultivate. If you have already reached a high level of spirituality and are already behaving like a Bodhisattva and want to learn how to cultivate to a Buddha’s level of spirituality, do you know how to do it? Take note that the six paramitas are inseparable from compassion. If your compassion is not enough, then your cultivation would not be perfected. That’s why if you want to attain Buddhahood, it’s inseparable to compassion. When Gautama Buddha was still alive, he taught about the four boundless states first before he expounded about the six paramitas.


“四无量心”就是慈悲喜舍。用佛法来讲,慈无量 心就是我的心大慈大悲,观世音菩萨就是大慈大悲,不 管看见什么东西,我都可怜别人,都想着要帮助别人, 爱众生之心,能与众生一起快乐和安宁。悲无量心是什 么呢?就是同情他人的痛苦,对别人的苦我都同情,救 度众生脱离苦境。今天看见别人很苦,这孩子生病我心 里很难过,这孩子身体好一点了吗?这个人的腿怎么轧 断了?这个人怎么要死了?“啪”地一下,眼泪掉下来 了。要记住,没有慈悲心的人到最后死的时候是上不去 的,而且很惨,学佛人一定要有人伤我痛的精神。

The ‘four boundless states’ are loving-kindness, compassion, empathetic joy and equanimity. The Buddha-Dharma expounded that the boundless state of loving-kindness is the mind that’s greatly compassionate and greatly merciful, like Guan Yin Bodhisattva. No matter what you see, you must pity others and want to help them. You must also love others and could live happily and peacefully with others. What’s the boundless state of compassion? It’s the ability to sympathise with others and understand their pain. Then you want to help them to be free from their suffering. When you see others in pain, you also feel the pain and feel like crying. Take note, those who lack compassion won’t be able to ascend to heaven when they die. They would also suffer tragically. That’s why Buddhists must possess a sympathetic spirit.


喜无量心,就是见人离苦得乐,看到别人好了,你 马上生起愉悦欢喜之心。你好了,我开心啊;你进步了,我开心啊;你身体好了,你念经好了,我开心啊。 舍无量心是什么意思呢?虽然上面有三个心——慈无量 心、悲无量心、喜无量心,但是我不执著,我继续舍弃 一切心中的差别(就是分别心),平等对待众生,对待 一切人,我能舍就舍,舍弃小我,成全大我,这样的心 就等于“等心”、“均心”、“平心”。等心是什么? 我跟你是一样的。均心是什么?我跟你都是在一个均等 心。平心是什么?大家都是公平合理的,平等的。

The boundless state of empathetic joy is when you feel genuine joy when you see that others are happy and well. “You recovered. I’m happy for you.” “You improved, I’m happy for you.” “You got better from reciting sutras; I’m happy for you.” What is the boundless state of equanimity? Although you may believe that you possess the previous three boundless states of loving-kindness, compassion and empathetic joy, you’re not attached to it; you don’t discriminate. You treat everybody equally regardless of their race and status and give whenever you can. You don’t hesitate to make sacrifices for the greater goal.


四无量心普缘无量众生,会让你拥有什么?如果你 经常有慈悲喜舍的心,会引来无量的福分。这句话你们 最喜欢听。很多人说:“我要有福,人家都有福气,我 怎么没福气?”人家的福气是怎么来的啊?人家是慈悲 喜舍啊。你舍了吗?看见人家开心了,你开心吗?看见 人家难过了,你难过吗?你整天讥笑别人,心想着最好 人家都倒霉,你这种人怎么会有福气呢?无量心,就是 心很大,心量大得不得了。

The four boundless states develop karmic bonds with countless sentient beings, what will it give you? If your mind could regularly stay in the boundless states of loving-kindness, compassion, empathetic joy and equanimity, then it will attract boundless worldly blessings. That is something that many likes to hear. Many people ask, “I want to be blessed. While are others blessed but I’m not?” Where do other people’s blessings come from? It comes from their acts of loving-kindness, compassion, empathetic joy and equanimity. Do you give? When you see other people happy, are you happy? When you see other people sad, are you sad? If you laugh at the misfortune of other people, do you think you will be blessed? For your mind to be in a boundless state means that you must be incredibly broad-minded and magnanimous.


如果你们能够经常做到慈悲喜舍四无量心,你们就可以升到色界的梵天(天有欲界天、色界天、无色界 天)。就是说,如果你在人间能够经常慈悲喜舍,别人 好了,你特别开心,你愿意帮助人家;你看见别人苦 了,你难过,心里老觉得人家很可怜,总去悲悯别人; 舍去自己的时间去帮助别人,把自己的东西给人家吃、 给人家用,你这个人就可以进入色界梵天,离西方极乐 世界不远了。当你能够慈悲喜舍,你的这个境界叫四无 量心,在佛教里面有一句话就叫“四梵行”。

If your mind could regularly stay in the boundless states of loving-kindness, compassion, empathetic joy and equanimity, then it means you could ascend to the Form Realm in heaven (heaven consists of the Desire Realm, the Form Realm and the Formless Realm). In other words, if you could regularly perform acts of loving-kindness, compassion, empathetic joy and equanimity, then you could ascend into the Form Realm. Examples of these acts are if others are fortunate, you are sincerely happy for them. If you see other people suffer, you are willing to sacrifice some of your time to help them. Or use some of your money to buy food for people to eat. If you do reach the Form Realm, that place is not too far away from the Western Pure Lands. If you could do all these acts, then it indicates that your level of spirituality encompasses the four boundless states.
