V 3-18 Ten Precepts that benefits One’s Health

Disclaimer: The translations are not official nor endorsed by 2OR, so please just treat it as a ‘fan-based’ translation. The Buddha-Dharma is profound. No matter how you convey it, it won’t be completely perfect. Because the Buddha-Dharma is an experience, it’s an awakening 【佛法深奥无比,怎么写,都不会是究竟圆满。 Please enjoy, and I hope it serves as a good filler until the official English version comes out.

Next, Master will talk about ten precepts that benefit one’s health. The first one is to be cautious of one’s speech and conduct. When you do so, you will make a few mistakes. Calamity comes from the mouth. When you speak irresponsibly or act recklessly, aren’t you getting yourself into trouble? Watch the news about how young girls in Australia got raped. Many of them walk out in the middle of the nightly scantily dressed, and it attracts bad people to do bad things to them. These problems have already been discussed by many religions, which was debated by the wider audience afterwards. Today, Master will not talk about whether it’s good or bad; he only says that it’s very easy to induce people to commit crimes, and causing harm to themselves.

The second one is to be abstemious when eating, and you will maintain your health well. Those who eat moderately are respecting their mind, and their brain won’t get worse as the brain is connected with the mind. Why is it that obese people are not mentally quick? How many obese people are there who are intelligent? When one eats too much, they get obese, and their brain will slow down.

The third is to have a few hobbies, and you will nurture your mind as you become peaceful. People who have a hobby of drinking fine tea isn’t considered bad right? Some places like to prepare tea ceremonies. But if one can take a whole day just drinking tea, then it’s a waste of time. That’s why the fewer hobbies you have, the better. For example, drinking alcohol, smoking, gambling, lusting for women etc. People who don’t have many hobbies are people who don’t have many desires, and so their mind becomes more peaceful. If your mind isn’t at peace, then how can you cultivate your mind?

The fourth is to remain patient towards any troubles. If one could forbear any amount of trouble and resentment, then it means you are very grounded. “If it’s something I should do then I’ll properly do it.” Then you’ll be happy. The Bodhisattvas’ words of wisdom teach us how to behave like an upright person. A person’s lifespan is limited, yet some still continue to smoke. Others have warned you not to participate in the racing competition, it’s too easy to get into a car accident, and you have to be extra careful. But you just had to race after having a few drinks and get into an unwholesome consequence. Bodhisattvas teach you that you must work hard. Working hard is an exercise. Once you’ve done your best, you would feel comfortable because there are no regrets, and so you won’t feel upset.

The fifth one, be cautious when expressing joy and anger; you must stay calm. Your breath is directly related to your emotions. When you become angry and throw your temper, or when you are joyful, your breath fluctuates. If a person doesn’t have any breaths left, don’t they die? Life is but a breath, right? That’s why you must properly control your breath. Many people thought that they had won the lottery, but then found out that they saw the six as a nine afterwards, and become disappointed. That’s why you must be cautious when you’re joyful or angry. Before you lose your temper, you should rethink whether it’s right for you to lose your temper and whether there’s any value in doing so. Would you be hurting your body, or hurting the person you love? So don’t lose your temper.

Today, when something great happened to you, you were very happy as you felt lucky. But then afterwards, something bad happened to you, and your luck ran out. That’s because after good luck comes bad luck. It’s a kind of dualistic phenomenon, just like yin and yang, they are connected. A person will never be lucky for all their life, nor will they be unlucky for all their life. When you try to learn about the state of joy or anger, you’ll recognise that it’s easy to forget about happy things. That’s because when you feel happy, you don’t really think that you are happy. You can test it when you’re watching a comedy show, and you laugh, you don’t really feel happy, but you only know that you’re laughing. But when a person is feeling angry or upset, they know that they are feeling very down, and they can’t take it anymore. Now you understand? In reality, the Bodhisattvas are with us in the Human Realm. Think about it; everything is what the Bodhisattvas teach us on how to behave like a proper human. Once you’re accomplished as a morally upright person, then you are behaving like a Bodhisattva, so aren’t you a Bodhisattva? Remain calm and peaceful.

The sixth one is to abstain from exaggerating and do things with others. When a person boasts, then they are exaggerating. It’s only a small matter, but you make it sound much larger than it actually is, in other words, you exaggerate it. You mustn’t exaggerate. Master is very low-key when helping others at the radio station, but many sentient beings call Master a Bodhisattva, while he just calls himself the radio host. If you call Master a Bodhisattva, then you are no longer equal with Master, and he will be upset as it means you have idolised him and you will subconsciously think that you and Master are different. There was a time on Christmas day when a fellow Buddhist came up to Master and asked, “Oh, so Master also eats?” She thought that it was weird, “Why do Bodhisattvas need to eat?” One mustn’t idolise and exaggerate themselves. What you are using to save others is the wisdom of the Bodhisattva, but what you show may not be the same as a Bodhisattva.

But when you are preaching the Dharma and trying to save them, at that moment, you are truly a Bodhisattva. Occasionally you may say a few light-hearted jokes. Yesterday, while Master was walking, he also casually preached to somebody. The person listened fervently and sat with me obediently. This is what it means to save wherever you go, and you must use various methods to save others. Do you understand? I will speak differently according to who the listener is. Don’t think that you are above others. Do things with others, in other words, if you depend on the ability of others, would you do things wrongly? If you only did something by yourself, it’s easier to make mistakes. There are many benefits to a mutual discussion. These incisive words are to teach the Buddha-Dharma in plain terms so that sentient beings could understand it and be saved easier; you must properly learn it.

For the seventh one, honour making concessions to bring people together. In other words, you must learn to make concessions in society. If you don’t, then you won’t be able to blend in with others. What is there to be arrogant of? Look at these some of these strong nations who want to be the global police, and attack whoever they want. As a result, they are also beaten frequently, and their economy wanes, and a lot of other nations don’t like them. Whether you are just an individual or a nation, you must be humble. The term honour has the meaning of respecting and sharing with others. Take a step back, and your possibility is as wide as the sea and sky. The more people make concessions, the brighter their future becomes. The more aggressive action they take, the more trouble their future becomes.

For the eighth one, be cautious with your speech, and be trustworthy. In other words, you must be careful when making a promise, and only then would others trust you. If you want to gain other people’s trust, refrain from exaggerating and lying. Master’s demand of you is already very low, and that is he wishes that you refrain from boasting and lying. A single lie requires another ten lies to make up for it. Also, after they lie, they forget about it later on and say out the truth. That’s why you must take note of it.

For the ninth one, reduce wastage and cherish your blessings. In your everyday life, try to minimise your wastage and cherish your worldly blessings. Why is it that you can cultivate to go to heaven or hell in the Human Realm? In reality, the Human Realm is a strange realm; it is a place where you borrow the fake to cultivate the real. If you madly cultivate, maybe you’ll never descend. If you borrow this place, it is like a transfer hub. If you madly commit unwholesome deeds, maybe you’ll never get to be a human again. Many listeners ask Master why is it that you can only cultivate in the Human Realm. During the programme, Master didn’t have enough time to reply, but he will tell you now, it’s because you possess both spirit and physical body in the Human Realm, that’s why you can cultivate both. Do the sentient beings in the Ghost Realms have a physical body? Do the sentient beings in the Asura Realm have a physical body? Do animals possess a spirit with the potential of wisdom unlocked? The spirit of an animal is fixed and lacks the potential to become wise like humans or be at the same level as a Bodhisattva. Their spirit had been processed, like second-hand goods, and is no longer the original primordial spirit.

For the tenth one, harbour a mind of compassion to cultivate your virtues. How do virtues manifest? It’s because you show compassion for others, you show pity towards others. You can feel the suffering of others, so when others are suffering, your virtues show. Master wants you to feel pity towards everybody you meet. When you pity everybody, you will develop a mind of compassion, you won’t develop hatred, and you’ll be accumulating blessings and virtues. What does it mean to cultivate virtues? Your virtuous nature is something that’s cultivated. That’s why it’s said that compassion is the foundation for humans in their path to heaven. Learning Buddhism and cultivating can maintain this foundation. The action of borrowing the fake to cultivate the real is to cherish this foundation. Only by cultivating a level of spirituality towards Buddhahood, and persisting in saving other sentient beings could you keep nourishing this foundation to return to the Heavenly Realms and attain perfect enlightenment.
